From Middle English *homles, *hamles, from Old English hāmlēas(“homeless”), equivalent to home + -less. Cognate with Danish hjemløs(“homeless”), Swedish hemlös(“homeless”), Dutch heemloos. Compare also German heimatlos(“homeless”), Icelandic heimilislaus(“homeless”).

"having no permanent abode," 1610s, from home (n.) + -less. Old English had hamleas, but the modern word probably is a new formation. As a noun meaning "homeless persons," by 1857.
