From Middle English *homles, *hamles, from Old English hāmlēas(“homeless”), equivalent to home + -less. Cognate with Danish hjemløs(“homeless”), Swedish hemlös(“homeless”), Dutch heemloos. Compare also German heimatlos(“homeless”), Icelandic heimilislaus(“homeless”).
