Borrowed from German Zander, from Slavic a language, perhaps via Middle Low German sandāt. [1] Pfeifer states that the first German attestation is in East Central German as czandas (in the Marienburger Treßlerbuch [2]) circa 1400, which he derives from a supposed Old Pomeranian *sądač; [3] Low Prussian forms include Zand and other Slavic languages (e.g. Kashubian) have been considered as possible sources. [2] Doublet of sandre.
