From Middle English unlic, unlich, from Old English unlīċ, unġelīċ(“unlike, different, dissimilar, diverse”), from Proto-Germanic *ungalīkaz; surface analysis: un- +‎ like. Cognate with Dutch ongelijk, German ungleich, Old Norse úlíkr(see there for North Germanic descendants).
