From Indonesian Sumatera, from Sanskrit समुद्र(samudra, “sea”). Mentioned in the 11th century in Sanskrit as समुद्रभूमि(samudrabhūmi, “land of Sumatra”), gradually replacing the earlier स्वर्नद्वीप(svarnadvīpa).
