Confused with Middle English richesse(“wealth”), from Old French richesse, from riche(“rich, wealthy”), of Germanic origin, from Frankish *rīki(“rich”) from Proto-Germanic *rīkijaz(“rich, powerful”), from Proto-Indo-European *reg-(“to straighten, direct, make right”).
