From Old English Finnas(plural), from Old Norse Finnr(“a hunter-gatherer”), from Proto-Germanic *finnaz (which see for more). Possibly originally meaning a ‘finder’ of food, referring to nomadic hunter-gatherers, particularly the Sami.

An Old and Middle Irish form of Fionn.
