From English dialectal kipper(“nimble; frisky”), of obscure origin. Perhaps akin to Old Norse kjapt(“briskly; impetuously”), kippa("to snatch; pull; jerk" > Middle English kippen(“to seize”)), kipra(“to wrinkle; draw tightly”), Norwegian kjapp(“fast; brisk”), Dutch kippen(“to seize; catch; grip”).
