From Middle English tawne, from Anglo-Norman tawné, from Old French tané, past participle of taner(“to tan”), from tan(“tanbark, tawny color”), from Gaulish tanno(“holm oak”), from Proto-Celtic *tanno-(“green oak”), of uncertain further origin.
