From Latin anomalia, from Ancient Greek ἀνωμαλία(anōmalía, “irregularity, anomaly”), from ἀνώμαλος(anṓmalos, “irregular, uneven”), negating the meaning of ὁμαλός(homalós, “even”), from ὁμός(homós, “same”).

From 1722 as "something abnormal or irregular."
