From the Spanish Tucsón[tukˈson], from the O'odham Cuk Ṣon(literally “Spring at the base of the black mountain”)[tʃʊk ʂɔːn], the “black mountain” referring to Sentinel Peak ("A" Mountain) just to the west of Tucson’s downtown area.
