From Middle English crouchen(“to bend, crouch”), variant of croken(“to bend, crook”), from crok(“crook, hook”), from Old Norse krókr(“hook”), from Proto-Germanic *krōkaz(“hook”), from Proto-Indo-European *gerg-(“wicker, bend”), from Proto-Indo-European *ger-(“to turn, wind, weave”).
